Self sufficiency as far as possible.

Well the long awaited plums finally ripened, a number of jars had been bottled and Jam made but as soon as they were all ripe, they disappeared in one night. Having to harvest and store the apples now to make sure we get some, hopefully they will continue to ripen so we have some cox’s for Christmas

August – Jam galore

Jam galore

Jam galore

The fruit continues to ripen and plum jam of all varieties is being made daily. The Broad beans are all picked and frozen, onions tied off ready for lifting. so time to sow some more carrots, radishes, and rocket. The runner beans are very late (my fault I guess) only just now showing flowers I hope we get some this year

Jam et al

Broad beans continue to produce copious amounts of beans, these were November sown Aquadulce.

The Victoria plums continue to swell and appear to have rust same as all the apple trees. I shall have to find out how to treat that.

With the raspberries delivering a punnet a day and freezer filled to the brim  I tried my hand at making some Jam today, and total sucess. Magic.

Onions planted as sets in March are ready for lifting, some have started to set seed.

improved watering

to enable me to go away for a several days at a time I have installed an automatic watering system. It runs on a couple of AAA batteries, duration and time lag can be set. Magic

Hello world!

hi all I am wildman, I have a smallholding in Devon. Keep a few horses and cattle as well as a fruit and veg plot. I try to grow all of our own vegetables with varying success, not being a natural gardener and not being 100% fit makes for some interesting results.  every year I try new things some work and some don’t.

so what am I growing this year, in the greenhouse, Grapes are coming on as are tomatos, I always plant carrots in a wide bed, then remove the front row as finger carrots when the toms are ready for planting out. Carrots are doing well tomatos so poor I doubt we will get a crop worth having this year.

Outside onion set planted in March are doing well, broad beans started in the greenhouse in november are now 6ft tall and loaded with beans, a second batch sown in March have just begun to flower.

Runner beans are slow to grow and I put that down to tired old seed must try to save some this year. We are picking endless amounts of raspberries and black currents, strawberries were very poor this year and planters need redoing for next years so will be taking masses of runners this year.

this years big mistake was puting loads of wood ash around the gooseberries, not a single berry to be seen, ah well another year next year.
