Think I've had a problem with carrot seeds rotting, only got one quarter of a row up out of 3 rows..... And our pear tree had a lovely load of flower blooms yet now they have gone we have only have one fruit set! Not sure what happened there! And our lettuce would do well at home if the cat would only stop eating it!

I don't check the temperature with a thermometer, but as you say, just keep an eye on it not getting too cold. I do, however, have a heated bench which I can use if it looks like getting cold, and I half bury the pots in the sand to help keep the heat in. Hope that helps, and good luck with your first crop!

Thanks for passing on the advice! We have a nice little envelope of four seeds that we hope will bring us our first ever own tomato crop this year. Do you check the temperature of the soil with a thermometer, or just know when it is around those degrees?
