These are the coordinates for the vayabaya patch in case you wish to google it, where we (the Spanglish couple) grow berries and vegetables until we can continue with the rest of our dream: Casitas de Figueredo, a place where to sell the produce from the berries and allocate visitors to the area in three small self-catering “casitas” (cottages) eight minutes on the way down from the beach and eighteen up
. Galicia is one of the hilly Spanish areas.
In the meantime we dedicate our time to the care of the berry and vegetable patches in the vayabaya plot not far from the area. Located close to the coast and protected from some of those sea weather conditions by mount das Penas you can find the other half of the project: berries.
The plot is divided in several patches. There are two dedicated to the berries: a big raspberry and blueberry patch and a smaller one where blueberries, red and black currants are grown.
The remaining patches are for the vegetables: a narrow stretch of land along the wall dividing from the neighbouring property. There is also a greenhouse/polytunnel of 3×9 metres. These are my “area of expertise” trying to supply all year round a good and healthy amount of homegrown produce for two gourmands in all senses of the word, but specially the one referred to those who eat too much.
We try to compensate the excess of calories intake with cycling routes back and forth, going from the vayabaya patch to the flat where we have been banished for the time being or to my parents’ where our dog has been kindly welcomed until one of this Figueredo cottages has walls to allocate us or at least a basement ;-p.
Every now and then we “pay a visit” to keep the plot clean and treat our souls with the positive energy we get there and our bodies with the tasty barbecues we make burning the old wood from the derelict buildings there.
Nevertheless, quoting a Spanish saying la cabra tira al monte (the goat goes for the forest or a leopard can’t change its spots) that my family for some reason likes to connect with us, this flat is facing open fields and some people’s gardens. So, technically I think you could say we are semi-countryside…
