Veg growing on an old kitchen garden

Money saving in the greenhouse

Maybe it’s my Scottish heritage, but I do like saving money when it comes to gardening! Last year I just couldn’t bear to throw away those dinky little pots you get with Gu choc pots … I experimented with a few last year but made the mistake of not adding hole in the bottom, with soggy results! So … this year I decided to use the good old fashioned method of heating a knitting needle over a candle flame to melt a neat little hole in each pot (we now have an embarrassingly large number in the collection). This was working really well till my ‘gardener’s mate’ came in a decided that DRILLING a hole would be much quicker. Well it may have been quicker, but what a mess it made to the bottom of the remaining pots! He found he could do several at time he said. It won’t be allowed again … unless of course time shows that big jagged holes are better than nice neat round holes of course …

For further savings the labels are recycled wooden spatulas collected from coffee shops over recent months.  Experience has shown that they need to be soaked before use in a dilute solution of bleach (or similar) otherwise they grow and amazing array of fungi! Last year I had a bit of a disaster with the peppers as I didn’t label them very well and had dozens of plants and no idea what variety they were because the names had washed off … THIS year I’m double labelling with permanent pen. I’m also trying a few saved seeds from one of my most productive pepper

Recycled pots, labels and some saved seed

plants from last season.  I suspect they were F1 hybrids so I don’t hold out much hope for a decent result, but certainly worth a go.
