Logans and Japanese Wineberries: better late than never

The eastern boundary

The eastern boundary gets sun for part of the day even in winter

We’ve promised ourselves all winter that we would ‘sort out ‘the long bed on our eastern boundary.  In our ‘new’ garden we inherited some very overgrown logans and ‘some very furry stemmed things’. We eventually identified the latter as Japanese wineberries. I’ll post photos when they crop, but they look like a cross between alpine strawberries and mini raspberries and grow in cute upward facing bunches. Delicious on ice cream or mixed with other berries (if they make it as far as the back door!). Sorting out the tangled ‘string’ of stems was a bit like unravelling knitting. Our fault we know, but it’s the first decent weather since we got round to putting up some good strong chestnut stakes and wires. Bizarrely the earth that looks the worst last season produced the best crop and the part of the border we worked hard was hopeless. that’s gardening I suppose … I’ve spoken severely to the end that didn’t fruit well last year and we will be ‘spoiling’ that end with plenty of ‘food.  I just hope that all this work is not too late for the current season … Of course the cat thought I was doing it all for her benefit and kept a good watch.
