Oh that is such a nuisance. Have you spoken to other plot holders to see what the general drainage is like? Maybe you need to improve the soil constituents next year to drain better? I do hope you do not lose too much veg because of this. I also hope others with allotments can give you some good advice. Thinking good thoughts for you. :-)

Hi I think the rain is good for the veggies but we have had so much they are getting battered. I an new to allotments and part of my plot seems to be flooded all the time after all the rain. I am trying to come up with Ideas to sort this problem out

Sounds great, thanks very much for the advice. Glad to meet fellow Vegans! I have a Veggie/Vegan FB page to share recipes and advice/info - if you are on FB would you be interested to join the page? I set it up to help veggies and vegans and to share info. Also it is to encourage those wishing to consider embarking on a veggie or vegan lifestyle. Can share gardening tips for vegetables on there too.
Thanks again for your help and advice and lovely to meet you! :-)

Good to read a vegan recipe - we're vegans.

Asparagus crowns should be planted during April. You can order them online and they should turn up at the right time for planting. Prepare the bed in Autumn, like this http://vegblogs.co.uk/livingofftheland/2011/11/29/asparagus-bed-free-cabbages/ Get at least ten crowns.

You're right, they don't crop in the first year but once you've got them, they should keep going for years and years.

Oh that sounds an excellent idea. I think for belt and braces I will do that with some more seeds and then plant them too - not only will it hopefully ensure some of them germinate but it will act as a check for which method works better and I am guessing it will be yours - or maybe combine the two, soak the seeds in the thermos of warm water and then give them a plastic perforated hat too! Thanks so much for the kind and helpful top - much appreciated! Happy growing. Please feel free to share again - always happy to hear from you! :-)

I often find that if you put chilli seeds in a Thermos of warm water overnight at 45C and then sow them you get much higher germination rates. If you have different types of chilli seeds you can wrap each type up in a muslin bag and tie it with different coloured cotton.

Yes my lettuce has made it through (so far) too! My autumn sowings for winter in the cold greenhouse got mysteriously eaten as did the sowings in the cold frame,. But the last of the summer sowings are still going strong in the frame. They are good to eat, though a little more bitter than the summer grown ones and lovely to go with watercress, land cress and herbs which have also survived. Last year mind you we had coriander ALL winter despite the snow!
