About
Funny how strange a word seems when you stare at it long enough (like About).
We are Pekka (who takes care of the greenhouse, watering, compost, digging, photographing, etc.) and Anja (the rest). We live in Lake District of Finland (in the central part of the country) on a hill with a view all the way to the horoscope (as our son used to express it some twenty years ago).
We share the hill with 39 adult huskies and 5 puppies. The neighbours’ suicidal cat visits us at times.
And we enjoy growing vegetables – hopefully enough for us and for our children (2+partners)/grandchildren (2); superfluous items tend to find their way to needy people. There are necessities – carrots, onions, garlic, leeks, calabrese, courgettes, beans, etc. – and passions – squashes, pumpkins, chillies, Jerusalem artichokes, and flowerwise poppies, columbines and hollyhocks. We also pick wild berries and collect mushrooms and in general roam in the forests. With 25 km to the nearest shop (and 55 to the nearest supermarket) self-sufficiency is a great thing!
And in case you are interested (and have a good magnifying glass): it’s me just walking out of the house door…

Sounds a wonderful life – thanks for the window in – Ben
I wish my family would eat as much fresh veg as your family I know we only live 5 mins from the local supermarket, ive asked them is they anything they want me to grow.No.
Do you mean that the supermarket is not interested in your vegetables? They usually aren’t as they have their own wholesale organisations and their demand exceeds a non-commercial scale of products. We have contacts with two smallish private gourmet restaurants and a catering enterprise; they all favour local organic products and our surplus usually satisfies their needs. We are not even offering them potatoes, beetroot, carrots, etc. but specialities that are expensive/difficult to get elsewhere.
