Where

South Norfolk in a rural location.

What

A garden plus a small (1.5 acres) field.

Garden

Fruit cage, greenhouse and potting shed

The field is described on the Land Preparation page. The garden is largely given over to a pond, flower beds and lawn but also has a fruit cage, greenhouse and potting shed along with a few small vegetable and herb beds.

We like to recycle what we can, the compost bins are an example of this – they were made using a dismantled old porch. They work fine. We’re using a three bay composting system, turning each bay’s compost into the next one twice.

The fruit cage has strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and currants plus an ericaceous compost planter for blueberries.

When

We moved in summer 2010 and started on the garden in earnest that autumn. After one full gardening year we are starting to learn what the soil and local climate are best (and worst) for. Although most of the infrastructure is in place, there’s lots more to do. We’ve ordered more trees and shrubs to plant bare rooted before March and, of course, there’s the normal gardening year ahead. Hopefully, the adventure will be happy and long…

Hi I love your recipes and am going to try thr date and walnut cake. The beetroot and orange chutney looks great as well.
I made some beetroot and onion chutney in 2010 but last year’s beetroot was a washout, although the chutney I made last year (just right now) – called glut chutney – is a great family favourite.
