About
Welcome to Highbarns. Just a little about myself and my garden to fill you in.
I’ve lived here for 20 years, the garden is about half an acre and the soil type a Hanslope clay.
Hanslope clay is a very heavy soil but due to a very high proportion of chalk (pH 7.6-8.0) it can restructure itself after poor treatment.
The garden is a heady 60m above sea level on the edge of the Fens in Cambridgeshire. Rainfall levels are moderate to low. Even though we are on the top of a ‘hill’ the garden can sometimes flood in the winter and some plants find it difficult to survive in the cold wet clay.
Onto the plants – my favourite flowers are anything that has a flower. I like to specialise in pinks and Dahlias and recently have started to try border carnations.
I like to enter my veg and flowers in the local shows and also like to do flower arranging.
