Blackcurrants & Blackberries

February19

Ok – so I got greedy the price was too good!  now all I have to do is to figure what to do with this bounty!

Thornless Blackberries.  Waldo.  A “highly recommended thornless, mid season blackberry variety which produces heavy crops of large fruit.   Exceptional flavour and are ideal for cooking or jam-making.”  Looking around I was looking at ball park £8 each for bare rooted plants. I made a visit to a good local nursery stockist who is now doing a roaring trade with allotments. I got these for £1.50 each!   I got 7 and I only had room for 4.  I need to make room for two rows and not the one row I had planned!  The are good plants and with well developed roots.  I have planted all the blackberries but I will need to move then after I make some space.

I certainly did not need any more blackcurrants.  I have three already but the price was soooo good.  Strong plants with good root systems and with three strong stems.  £1.40 each!   I now have three more.  At least I have space for these.  I had saved space for gooseberries but I think they are going to have to wait.  These are Ben Lomond.  High yielding with good flavour.  Cropping late July or early August.  As with all currants, blackcurrants are best grown approx 1.5m apart

That is fantastic value! It’s actually inspired me to check my local nursery! :P
